Around 12,000 numbered torches have been produced for the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay. The aerodynamic design is a distinctly modern interpretation of the traditional wooden torch, in which metal catches fire and burns. The torch was designed by Pininfarina and has been developed to fulfil strict technical requirements. For example, the torch must never go out, even in snow, rain or winds of 120 km per hour. The flame should be no taller than 10cm and should be able to remain alight for 15 minutes. The torch is made of aluminium, and comprises parts made of steel, copper and techno-polymers. It is 765mm tall, 108mm in diameter and weighs 1,850g.
